HIGH POINT, N.C. — An Amtrak train heading from Raleigh to Charlotte hit a vehicle on the tracks Tuesday morning, injuring one person. At the time of the crash, 42 people were on the Piedmont Train 73.
The one passenger injured was taken to the hospital. Their condition is not known at this time.
After the crash, the train went to the High Point station and passengers were rerouted onto Piedmont Train 75 so they could reach their destinations after a lengthy delay.
"Amtrak is working with local law enforcement to investigate the incident," Amtrak senior public relations manager Kimberly Woods told WCNC Charlotte. "According to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), trespassing along railroad rights-of-way is the leading cause of rail-related deaths in America, and railroad crossing incidents are the second leading cause of rail-related deaths in America."
Due to the crash, the train had to be recrewed, which increased the delay.
This particular train -- Piedmont Train 73 -- just started offering routes between Raleigh and Charlotte again in August 2020.
