CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Drivers on I-277 in uptown Charlotte will need to make a little extra time for their morning and afternoon commutes.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation has begun work on a $16 million project that will improve a total of 22 bridges in the area. As a result, a section of the inner loop of I-277 between 10th Street and Fourth Street will be down to just one lane around the clock through Dec. 21, and may need to continue after the holidays, depending on the contractor’s progress.
At the same time, the left westbound lane of Independence Boulevard approaching I-277 will be closed for construction.
Crews began work at 9 p.m. Monday. NCDOT officials said workers will be removing concrete slabs and installing a new driving surface on bridges over Elizabeth Avenue, Third Street and Fourth Street.
