Man who crashed car into fence at Charlotte home was being chased from Salisbury, police say

New information shared later on Wednesday revealed more details.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A car crashed into a fence at an east Charlotte home Wednesday around 4:45 a.m. The Salisbury Police Department later confirmed the car that crashed was involved in a chase that started in their jurisdiction.

The crash happened near the intersection of East Sugar Creek and Anderson Street. Traffic was affected, but the scene eventually cleared out. Charlotte Fire responded although Medic did not.

Salisbury Police said the chase started after officers responded to the Tractor Supply store on South Jake Alexander Boulevard in town just before 4 a.m. for an alarm call. Officers reported a silver car entered the store's parking lot, but quickly left.

An officer tried to conduct an investigative traffic stop to see if the car was tied to the alarm, but the department said the driver of the silver car sped up and got onto I-85 southbound from Julian Road. Police said speeds during the chase exceeded 100 mph.

Salisbury Police said the chase ended in the outskirts of Charlotte after the driver of the silver car, later identified as 30-year-old Jason Obriant Evans Jr., lost control and crashed into the fence. He was taken into custody a short distance away from the car after trying to run away.

Evans faces a slew of charges tied to the chase, ranging from several drug possession charges to resisting a public officer. He was also served with several outstanding warrants from Mecklenburg and Union counties, including assault on a female and false imprisonment. Evans remains jailed in the Rowan County Detention Center under no bond.

Salisbury Police noted the Rowan County Sheriff's Office also joined in the chase to help them.
