CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte transportation leaders are expected to meet for the first time on Tuesday to flesh out their plans for express lanes on Interstate 77 south of Uptown Charlotte.
The working group will discuss their objectives, including plans to find a private company to design, build and maintain future express lanes.
Officials told WCNC Charlotte they plan to hold public meetings to share more details on the project next year.
The Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO) voted to approve the express lanes in October after support from Charlotte City Council to approve a public-private partnership plan to build express lanes. The Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners narrowly voted to recommend denying the plan, but the CRTPO ultimately gave the project the green light.
Officials previously told WCNC Charlotte the express lanes would be the most expensive transportation project in state history, partly because every interchange on I-77 between Uptown and South Carolina would need to be rebuilt.
