Drivers pack Charlotte parking lot to do burnouts, doughnuts

CMPD issued dozens of citations since February in connection with these so-called "street takeovers" that are shutting down busy Charlotte roads.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Dangerous street stunts and takeovers continue to pop up across the Charlotte area as police try to crack down on these unsafe meetings.

WCNC Charlotte received a video from a viewer that showed a large gathering at a warehouse parking lot in south Charlotte near the South Carolina state line over the weekend.

Jessica Broom, a Warehouse Operations Manager said it's not unusual to see drivers doing stunts in the parking lots.

"Every weekend -- usually, when you come in on Monday it's out here and it's also on our truck driver’s yard," she said.

Tire markings cover a stretch of the lot. Broom shared a video she took of a driver just last month in the same lot.

"A couple of weeks ago, there was a car doing doughnuts and he did so many that his tires melted off," she continued. "It was in pieces out there, just big chunks."

Broom said it does create a safety issue for drivers.

"There were trailers that were out there last week and there was so much smoke that you could not see if somebody was on the other side of the trailer or not," Broom said. "Somebody can seriously get hurt."

CMPD said last week that it is investigating numerous incidents involving drivers shutting down busy roads in Charlotte to do doughnuts and burnouts. More than a dozen citations were issued, two people were arrested and multiple vehicles were seized last weekend, CMPD said.

Maj. Dave Johnson said the difficult part is tracking down the drivers involved because they scatter when officers arrive.

“In instances where we have an idea of where they are going to be we will be proactive," Johnson said. "When they pop up in places we were not expecting, then we respond and we have a protocol in place to maximize law enforcement."

This weekend from March 3 to March 5, CMPD cited five drivers and confiscated five cars as evidence.

Since February, the agency issued 59 citations, seized 17 vehicles and made six arrests related to reckless driving and street racing groups.

WCNC Charlotte reached out to CMPD about this particular incident. A spokesperson said CMPD did stop a driver for illegal speed racing Saturday night about a mile away from the warehouse.
