CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, S.C. — The father of a Chesterfield County student who was hurt when a school bus flipped over in 2022 filed a lawsuit against the school district and bus driver.
The crash happened on McCaskill Road back in August 2022. South Carolina state troopers cited the driver for going too fast on a dirt road, causing the bus to flip when they lost control. The Chesterfield County School District said eight of the 24 students on board were taken to the hospital.
"Next thing we know, we just hear 'boom' and then we all fall onto the ground," one student said. "We were rushing to get out of the exits."
The lawsuit alleges that the driver, identified as Jessica Johnson, was operating the bus "negligently and recklessly" when the crash happened. The suit also accuses the school district of failing to provide adequate training for Johnson before allowing her to drive with students. The lawsuit is asking a jury to award damages for medical expenses, pain and suffering, as well as other compensatory damages.
