4-year-old dies in 'weather-related crash' in Catawba County

NC State Highway Patrol said a 2008 GMC Acadia crossed the centerline, colliding head-on with a 2022 GMC Yukon Thursday morning.

CLAREMONT, N.C. — A 4-year-old girl has died and three other children are in the hospital after two vehicles collided in Catawba County Thursday morning. 

NC State Highway Patrol said the crash happened on Boggs Road near Hunsucker Drive just after 8 a.m. Troopers said a 2008 GMC Acadia crossed the centerline, crashing head-on with a 2022 GMC Yukon. The wreck occurred during heavy rain conditions.

The driver of the Acadia was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Two child passengers were taken to area hospitals. A 4-year-old died due to the crash while another child has life-threatening injuries.

Three people were also in the Yukon and were taken to the hospital. The driver and one child both have non-life-threatening injuries. A second child has life-threatening injuries.

Highway Patrol said impairment was not a contributing factor in the crash. Possible charges are pending.

Heavy bands of rain and some isolated flash flooding was happening at the time of the incident.
