All lanes of I-77 reopen after multiple crashes in Iredell County

At one point, northbound traffic was backed up 10 miles into northern Mecklenburg County.

IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — Multiple crashes caused significant delays along Interstate 77 in Iredell County Tuesday morning because of snow and winter weather.

One of the most significant crashes happened around 4:45 a.m. near Mooresville around mile marker 38 on I-77 North. The general purpose lanes heading north were blocked due to the crash, and those traveling in the area were urged to take alternate routes like Highway 21 to avoid the area. The lanes were closed for hours but have since reopened.

“We did see some extra collisions and different disabled motorists that were out on the roadways this morning. A lot of it due to the inclement weather," Robert Rogers, a trooper with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, told WCNC Charlotte.

Multiple crashes were reported across a span of 13 miles in the Iredell County area on I-77 Tuesday morning, with weather conditions overnight leading to icy roads in the region. Drivers are asked to use caution, expect delays, and take alternate routes when possible.

During the early morning hours, the temperature in Mooresville got as cold as 26 degrees. Combined with gusty winds up to 16 mph, the wind chill made it feel closer to 22 degrees at sunrise.
