CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. — All lanes of U.S. 321 were shut down in northern Caldwell County near Blowing Rock due to a crash involving a logging truck, officials said. Shortly after the road reopened, it closed again when the truck tipped over.
The first crash happened on the southbound side of U.S. 321 near Kirby Mountain Road, which is just south of the Black Bear General Store and Blowing Rock. The truck driver apparently lost control and the trailer tipped over, spilling logs all over the highway.
Traffic in both directions was at a standstill while crews worked to clear the scene.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation originally said the road could be closed until 1:30 p.m. due to logs and diesel being spilled. North Carolina State Highway Patrol confirmed the road reopened just after 11 a.m.
Around 11:50 a.m. officials said, though the logs had been removed, the road was shut down again after the truck was traveling south and had a brake failure, going around a curve and tipping over on the driver's side.
Troopers confirmed no one was killed in the crash.
