16-year-old dies after being hit by a car on Lancaster County highway

It happened around 3:45 p.m. Wednesday on Hwy. 160 near the intersection of Calvin Hall Rd.

INDIAN LAND, S.C. — A 16-year-old from Indian Land who was walking along a highway Wednesday afternoon was hit and killed by a car, officials said.

The accident happened around 3:45 p.m. on Hwy. 160 near the intersection of Calvin Hall Rd. about three miles east of Fort Mill.

Highway Patrol said a 2018 Ford SUV was traveling west on 160 when the vehicle hit the victim who was on the shoulder of the road. The victim was taken to the hospital and later died.

Officials said the victim's identity would not be released due to the victim's age. However, the family told NBC Charlotte his name was Zack Rivers.

Family said Rivers was walking home from his second day at a new job when the accident happened. They said authorities told them the teen was far off the road and doing everything right as a pedestrian.

The driver of the SUV, 60-year-old Stephen Strokis, was not hurt. There was no immediate word on whether charges will be filed. It was also unclear if speed or impairment were factors in the crash.

The family was told Strokis suffered a medical issue.
