CMPD identifies people killed in crash on Freedom Drive

The driver of a Dodge Challenger is accused of speeding when he crashed into a driver making a U-turn on Freedom Drive, killing two people.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man is facing charges after a crash killed two people in west Charlotte on Wednesday morning, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said.

CMPD and Medic responded to a crash on Freedom Drive near the interchange with Interstate 85 around 8 a.m. on Oct. 30. When officers arrived, they found a 2024 Mitsubishi Mirage involved in a wreck with a 2010 Dodge Challenger. Medic confirmed that two people were pronounced dead at the scene. Freedom Drive was closed for several hours while crews investigated the crash and cleared the scene.

CMPD confirmed both people who died were in the Mitsubishi. They were identified as Gregory Matthew Thompson, 67, and Connie Lee Yates, 70. Officers allege that Thompson was making a U-turn on Freedom Drive when the Dodge, being driven by Tajarvis Deonte Wall, crashed into his Mitsubishi. CMPD said Wall and a juvenile in the car with him were taken to the hospital with injuries that weren't life-threatening.  Everyone involved in the crash was wearing a seatbelt, according to investigators.

Excessive speed was a contributing factor in the crash, according to CMPD. Toxicology results are pending for Wall, who is still in the hospital. Once he is released, Wall will be charged with two counts of misdemeanor death by vehicle, no driver's license, improper use of lane, child safety seat violations, speeding and a window tint violation.

Anyone with information about this crash is asked to call Charlotte Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
