CHARLOTTE, N.C. — One person was killed in a crash on the inner loop of Interstate 485 near Mount Holly Road in northwest Charlotte Wednesday afternoon, Medic said.

The inner loop of I-485 was shut down near Gum Branch Road while crews worked to clear the scene and investigation the crash. The roadway reopened before the Tuesday evening rush hour.

Medic confirmed one person was pronounced dead at the scene. Another person was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Authorities haven't provided any further information at this time.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known.

Roadway conditions were wet at the time of the crash. WCNC Charlotte Meteorologist Chris Mulcahy said heavy rain is possible through the late afternoon across the region.

Rain Wednesday through Thursday morning, could produce flooding in low-lying areas and roadways with poor drainage. Mulcahy has forecast a total of one to two inches of rain.

Around the same time, firefighters and paramedics also responded to a crash on I-85 north at Beatties Ford Road. In that crash, one person suffered non-life threatening injuries, according to Medic.

Between midnight and 5 p.m. Wednesday, Medic told WCNC Charlotte they had responded to 29 traffic-related calls. While they could not speculate on the cause of the crashes, the spokesperson said the number was not unusual compared to other days.
