Man killed in head-on crash that injured 5 people, police say

Police said a man was killed when he crossed the center line and crashed into a van carrying five people.

ALBEMARLE, N.C. — One person was killed and five others were injured in a head-on crash on U.S. 52 in Albemarle late Friday night, police said.

Albemarle Police responded to a crash near Old Charlotte Road just after 11:30 p.m. on Feb. 9, investigators said. When officers arrived, they determined that a sedan traveling north crossed the center line and hit a van head-on.

The driver of the car, 58-year-old Darryl Chappell, died at the scene. All five people in the van were taken to the hospital for treatment. Detectives haven't provided an update on their condition at this time.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Albemarle Police Department immediately.
