The driver of the Nissan, identified as 43-year-old Hector Domingo Medrano Orellana, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Mazda was taken to the hospital for treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.

CMPD said its initial investigation indicates that Orellana was driving south on Monroe Road when he lost control and crossed the center line, hitting the Mazda head-on. It's unclear if impairment was a factor in the crash.

The investigation is active and ongoing. Anyone with information about this crash is asked to call Detective Worthy at 704-432-2169, extension 4. Witnesses may also call Charlotte Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
