NC man charged in crash that killed Lawndale Man, troopers say

A Lawndale man was killed when his van was hit by a driver in a Dodge Ram who ran a stop sign, troopers said.

LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. — A man is facing multiple charges in connection with a deadly crash in Lincoln County on Monday, state troopers said.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to a crash at the intersection of North Carolina 10 and North Carolina 18 around 7:15 a.m. on July 15. Troopers say the driver of a 2019 Dodge Ram ran a stop sign on North Carolina 10 and was hit by a 1997 Dodge van coming from the other direction. The crash caused the van to flip over onto its side.

The driver of the truck, 31-year-old Jose Vargas Moreno, was not hurt. Three passengers in the Moreno's truck were also not injured, according to troopers.

Moreno was arrested and charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle, no driver's license and failure to yield. H was given a $15,000 bond. State troopers said they do not suspect impairment or speed to be factors in the crash.

WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.
