Alcohol suspected in deadly south Charlotte crash

CMPD said the driver was thrown from his vehicle after hitting a tree on Pineville-Matthews Road. Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the wreck.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man was killed after being thrown from a car in a crash on Pineville-Matthews Road in south Charlotte Monday night, police said. 

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police were called to a crash on Pineville-Matthews Road near Cedarwood Country Club and Rea Road a little before 10:30 p.m. When officers got to the area, they found a Ford Focus in the median that was on fire with heavy damage. 

The driver of the vehicle, identified as 26-year-old Jonathan Altieri, was found a short distance away from the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

CMPD investigators determined Altieri was traveling northeast on Pineville-Matthews Road when he veered left and onto the median and hit a tree. Police said he was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the vehicle during the crash. 

CMPD said speed and alcohol are suspected in the crash. The investigation is ongoing. Any person with information about this incident is asked to call CMPD's Crime Stoppers tip line at 704-334-1600. Witnesses may also speak with CMPD's Public Affairs Office at 704-432-2169, extension 1.
