IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — A Huntersville woman was killed in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 77 in northern Iredell County Monday night, state troopers said.
The crash happened a little after 8:30 p.m. on the northbound side of I-77 near Tomlin Mill Road and the community of Olin, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Troopers said a 2023 Volkswagen Arteon was heading south in the northbound lanes when the driver, 65-year-old Stephney Lynn Morris, crashed head-on into a 2007 Toyota SUV. The impact sent the Volkswagen off the road and into a tree. Morris was not wearing a seatbelt, troopers said.
The driver and passengers in the Toyota were rushed to a hospital in Wilkes County with injuries that aren't considered life-threatening.
The initial investigation indicates that speed and impairment contributed to the crash. No charges will be filed, according to Master Trooper Christopher M. Casey.
