STATESVILLE, N.C. — Beginning Sunday, April 16 at 7 p.m., the E. Broad Street loop ramp onto I-77 North in Statesville will be closed, according to a press release from the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT).
This closure, which NCDOT said is expected to last up to 8 weeks, is part of the I-40, I-77 interchange improvement project.
During construction on the new loop, NCDOT will provide drivers with a detour from I-77 South to U.S. 70 (exit 49A) and then back to I-77 North.
The I-40, I-77 Interchange project began in 2012 and is an $89 million project.
The interchange was built in the late 1960s, with projections about 5,000 vehicles would pass through each day. The DOT says current traffic counts at the Iredell County interchange are about 70,000 vehicles per day.
Crews will build a multi-level interchange between the two interstates and also improve U.S. Highway 21 so drivers on either highway can make it to the route through Statesville.
Currently, the project is projected to be finished by Winter 2023.
NCDOT is asking drivers to use caution in construction zones. .
