CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Inbound lanes of Albemarle Road approaching Independence Boulevard in east Charlotte have reopened after being closed most of Monday because of a gas leak, according to the Charlotte Fire Department.
The lanes headed toward Charlotte on Albemarle Road, also known as North Carolina Highway 27, were closed at North Sharon Amity Road. The outbound lanes, which are used heavily during the evening rush hour, remained open to drivers.
Piedmont Natural Gas worked to make repairs on Monday, according to the fire department.
"A third-party contractor unaffiliated with Piedmont Natural Gas damaged a natural gas pipeline," Piedmont Natural Gas said in a statement released to WCNC Charlotte. " Piedmont technicians worked with local emergency responders to safely secure the site. Repairs are underway and should be completed later this evening."
On social media, the fire department was asking drivers to use extra caution.
"Significant delays in the area and please use extreme caution around emergency vehicles," the fire department said on X, the social media platform formally known as Twitter.
