CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A major gas leak in northeast Charlotte closed a portion of West W.T. Harris Boulevard for hours, causing traffic delays.
Shortly before 1 p.m., the Charlotte Fire Department and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said they were responding to the gas leak, which was near Medical Plaza Drive and IBM Drive.
According to fire officials, an 88-inch steel gas line was cut and needs to be repaired.
The portion of West W.T. Harris Boulevard, which is west of Interstate 85, reopened at 10:25 p.m. after all repairs were completed.
Drivers were encouraged to avoid the area during the closure. University City Boulevard and West Mallard Creek Church Road were available as alternative routes.
