One dead, another injured in Interstate 77 crash in Huntersville

Crash had shutdown all lanes southbound during Wednesday evening commute

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — One person died and another was seriously injured after a crash on Interstate 77 in Huntersville Wednesday evening. 

The crash happened around 4:45 p.m. near exit 23 for Gilead Rd.

MEDIC said one person died and another person was taken to Atrium Carolinas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Police were investigating the crash which involved a box truck and SUV. 

At the height of the closure, southbound traffic delay stretched back to Davidson. One lane reopened around 5:30 p.m.

Elsewhere in the Charlotte area Wednesday evening, drivers faced numerous other road closures:

Interstate 85 was closed in northeast Charlotte because of police activity.

A water main break and a gas line break near uptown Charlotte had closed South Boulevard and North Tryon Street respectively.

Additionally, one person was taken to Novant Presbyterian hospital for treatment of serious injuries after a crash on North Graham Street near Dogwood Ave. That crash had all lanes closed around 6 p.m.
