All lanes of I-85 are open after a crash near Gastonia shut down all lanes during rush hour. Drivers are still experiencing extensive delays on interstate 85 due to congestion from the crash.
All lanes of I-85 northbound have reopened after this crash, which occurred near Exit 22 for South Main Street, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation. Delays northbound stretch back at least to the interchange with U.S. 321.
Southbound lanes reportedly remain open but are also experiencing delays, which stretch back at least to Interstate 485 in west Charlotte.
Northbound drivers on I-85 can use one of two suggested detours from the North Carolina Department of Transportation:
- Detour 1: Motorists must take Exit 21 (Cox Rd). Follow Cox Rd and turn left onto US-74 East. Continue on US-74 East and take a left onto Main St. Follow Main St to re-access I-85 North.
- Alt Route: Motorists must take Exit 10A (US-29/US-74). Follow US-29/US-74 East and take a left onto NC-273 North (Park St). Follow NC-273 North to re-access I-85 North
In a post on X, Gaston County said that I-85 is projected to remain closed until 7 p.m.
WCNC Charlotte is working to learn more about the crash and to determine if anyone was injured.
