Troopers identify woman killed in I-85 crash

The road reopened just before 8:30 a.m., according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — A deadly crash shut down a section of Interstate 85 in Rowan County for hours on Friday.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol said the crash happened a little before 5 a.m. just past Lane Street in the southbound lanes of I-85 in Kannapolis. Troopers said a 2014 Kia Optima was stopped in the left lane due to car trouble. The driver, 27-year-old Arlexia Taylor of Winston-Salem, got out of the vehicle and was hit by a 2017 Chevrolet truck, troopers said.

Taylor died at the scene. Troopers said speed and alcohol were not contributing factors to the crash and no charges have been announced. The driver of the truck, a 54-year-old man from Yadkinville, was taken to a Concord hospital with minor injuries.

The southbound lanes of I-85 were closed for approximately two hours with traffic being detoured onto U.S. 29 for the investigation. The road reopened around 8:30 a.m. Friday.
