CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Wendover Road/Eastway Drive bridge over Independence Boulevard was repaired and subsequently reopened after a crash damaged it.
On Friday, the North Carolina Department of Transportation closed two of the four lanes of westbound U.S. 74 in Mecklenburg County at mile marker 245 in Charlotte near Eastway Drive/Wendover Road starting at 9 a.m. The exit ramp from U.S. 74 eastbound to Wendover Road was also closed. A lane on the bridge above was also blocked while repairs were made to the pedestrian handrail and the concrete was replaced that was damaged by the crash last week.
The actual repairs started Sunday around 9 p.m. and were done by early Monday morning.
Multiple vehicles were involved in crashes after debris fell onto Independence Boulevard in east Charlotte Wednesday. Around 4:30 p.m., the debris fell from the Eastway Drive bridge onto the inbound lanes of Independence Boulevard. At least three of the four lanes traveling to Charlotte were closed for several hours before reopening later Wednesday evening.
The crash atop the bridge appeared to cause the debris to fall onto the roadway below.
At least one person was transported to the hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
Traffic was delayed both inbound and outbound following the crash. Drivers were advised to use detours to avoid backups. Monroe Road, Randolph Road and Central Avenue are among the suggested detours.
"Depending on progress, another night of closures may be needed," NCDOT told WCNC Charlotte.
