I-277 back open after lengthy shutdown caused by 'emergency situation'

All lanes of Interstate 277 in Uptown near Davidson Street were closed Friday morning due to an emergency situation on a bridge, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — All lanes of Interstate 277 were reopened after a police situation closed the highway for nearly two hours Friday morning. 

Medic confirmed I-277 was closed in both directions between Davidson and Caldwell streets for an emergency call around 8 a.m. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said officers were in the process of de-escalating an emergency situation. 

CMPD officers were able to get the person off the bridge and onto a stretcher just before 9:30 a.m. CMPD hasn't provided any further information about the incident at this time.

All traffic on I-277 was redirected to 11th =and 12th streets in Uptown. Drivers reported major traffic delays across Charlotte on Interstate 77, Interstate 85, Interstate 485 and other primary roads. 

WCNC Charlotte Traffic reported a 35-minute drive into Uptown from Matthews on Independence Boulevard due to the delays. For Mint Hil drivers, it took nearly 45 minutes to get into Charlotte. Drive times from Union County exceeded an hour in some locations due to the traffic delays.
