6 hurt in crash that caused miles-long backups on I-77

The crash happened on the northbound side of I-77 near Brookshire Boulevard around 3 p.m. Thursday.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Traffic was backed up for miles after a serious crash on Interstate 77 near Uptown Charlotte. 

The crash happened around 3 p.m. near the exit for Brookshire Boulevard. At least two lanes were closed, according to North Carolina DOT. Multiple Medic ambulances are on the scene, as well as North Carolina state troopers. Six people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to Medic.

Traffic was backed up around 5 miles to Tyvola Road in south Charlotte due to the lane closures. 

Drivers should avoid the area until further notice. Drivers heading toward Lake Norman can use I-485 to I-77 near Northlake Mall as an alternate route. Drivers can also take I-85 north to I-77 north of the crash.
