ROCK HILL, S.C. — A portion of Celanese Road in Rock Hill is "back open and safe" after a small piece of concrete fell from an Interstate 77 overpass, South Carolina transportation officials said.
The westbound lanes of Celanese Road were closed between Riverview Road and Cherry Road, Rock Hill police said Thursday. The closure came after multiple people posed to social media saying pieces of the overpass were crumbling and falling onto the road.
The South Carolina Department of Transporation told WCNC Charlotte the bridge is open and safe after crews repaired surface damage.
SCDOT told WCNC Charlotte Thursday that a piece of concrete from a patched section of the bridge was fixed after it was reported by police. A spokesperson for SCDOT issued the following statement to WCNC Charlotte detailing those repairs:
"Late yesterday, SCDOT was notified by local law enforcement that a piece of concrete from a patched section of the bridge deck fell from the 77 overpass bridge deck onto Celanese Road in Rock Hill.
Crews responded immediately and worked overnight to make a rapid repair to the bridge and all lanes were open to traffic at approximately 4 a.m. this morning."
