MOORESVILLE, N.C. — A project to improve 12 miles of Interstate 77 in Iredell County will start this weekend, North Carolina transportation officials said.
NCDOT approved a $21.4 million contract for Tennessee-based contractor Maymead Inc. to resurface I-77 from Exit 36 (North Carolina 150) in Mooresville to just south of Exit 49 (U.S. 70) in Statesville. Overnight lane closures are expected along I-77 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday over the next several months. The closures will be implemented between mile markers 37 and 45 on I-77.
Crews will begin by patching the road where needed. Once those patches are in place, 2 inches of asphalt will be added to most of the area.
NCDOT says crews will install 130,000 feet of rumble strips and 335,000 linear feet of pavement markings on the road as part of the projects. These improvements will be implemented in 2025. In addition to those upgrades, the contract calls for resurfacing exit ramps and installing new guardrails within the project limits.
This is one of several major road projects in the Iredell County area. NCDOT has plans to widen North Carolina 150 from east of I-77 west to Denver. Construction for the $269 million project is scheduled to begin in 2025.
