Sign falls onto I-77, causing major backups near Carowinds

Traffic on southbound I-77 backed up past Tyvola Road due to a highway sign that fell onto the road Tuesday afternoon.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The southbound lanes of Interstate 77 were backed up for several miles due to a highway sign that fell on the road near Carowinds Tuesday afternoon. All lanes have since reopened.

An exit sign near Exit 90 for Carowinds Boulevard collapsed onto the southbound lanes of I-77 around 1 p.m. Tuesday. Multiple first responder crews were called to the scene.

As of 3:30 p.m., the two left lanes of I-77 had reopened. Traffic is still backed up into Charlotte due to the partial closure. As of 5 p.m., the sign has been cleared and all lanes have reopened, but delays are still expected.

ALTERNATE ROUTE

  • Drivers can take South Tryon Street/Highway 49 to Carowinds Boulevard. Follow Carowinds Boulevard to I-77 southbound.
