Interstate 85 closure causes miles of backup near Kings Mountain

Drivers were asked to use NC 216 as a detour around the I-85 closure Tuesday afternoon.

KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. — All lanes of Interstate 85 were closed in Cleveland County, North Carolina, near Kings Mountain Tuesday afternoon.

The closure impacted the southbound lanes, backing up traffic for seven miles at its height, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

The southbound road closures began at mile marker 6.5 near Exit 8 for NC 161, also known as York Road.

A crash just before 1 p.m. caused the closure, but details around the traffic incident are not known at this time.

NCDOT suggested drivers take the following detours to avoid the delays:

  • Use NC 161 north to US 74 west
  • Travel to North Piedmont Ave and take NC 216 south
  • Use NC 216 south for six miles to access  I-85 south

The northbound lanes remained open. The southbound lanes reopened just before 3 p.m.
