Major backups on I-85 after deadly crash in west Charlotte

Multiple lanes of northbound Interstate 85 were shut down near Freedom Drive after a deadly crash involving a pedestrian, officials said.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — All lanes are back open on Interstate 85 in west Charlotte after a deadly crash near Freedom Drive. 

The crash happened around 6:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-85 between Freedom Drive and Tuckaseegee Road. Officials said the crash involved a pedestrian. At least three lanes were closed at one time. 

North Carolina State Highway Patrol hasn't said what caused the crash or given any further details. Traffic was backing up past the exit for Little Rock Road by 7:30 a.m.  Drivers were encouraged to find an alternate route due to major backups.

Foggy conditions caused reduced visibility in the Charlotte area Thursday morning. Some areas saw less than a half-mile of visibility heading into morning rush hour traffic. Drive times into Charlotte were around an hour for several cities and towns due to crashes on I-77 and I-85.
