CHARLOTTE, N.C. — North Carolina transportation officials unanimously approved a resolution on Tuesday to formally rename a bridge in northeast Charlotte after fallen Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer Mia Goodwin.
Goodwin was hit and killed by a truck driver on Interstate 85 in northeast Charlotte in December 2021. The driver, Daniel Leon Morgan, pleaded guilty in January to numerous charges related to the crash, including involuntary manslaughter and reckless driving. He's expected to spend up to 29 months in prison.
Charlotte City Council adopted a resolution last September to name the bridge along W.T. Harris Boulevard that crosses I-85, near where Goodwin was killed, after the fallen officer. The North Carolina Department of Transportation approved the move on Tuesday.
She was a six-year veteran of the force and had recently returned to duty after being on maternity leave. Her husband, Brenton Goodwin, is a firefighter with the Charlotte Fire Department.
Goodwin was the first female CMPD officer to die in the line of duty. She and three other officers were helping state troopers close a portion of I-85 after a truck carrying grain spilled a sticky substance on the highway. State troopers said Morgan failed to move over and didn't slow down before crashing into four CMPD cruisers, another tractor-trailer and Goodwin.
