MONROE, N.C. — A traffic sign in Monroe that had signaled to drivers the road was closed for a few weeks appears to have been hacked.
According to a WCNC Charlotte viewer who sent in a picture of the incorrect sign, the messaging changed on Sunday. The message reads "Hillary you missed," seemingly referring to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
After former President Donald Trump narrowly avoided an assassination attempt on Saturday, conspiracy theories ranging from speculation about who the shooter was to claims about whether or not incident was planned, quickly accumulated millions of views on social media, according to NBC News. One such theory was from the far-right-wing group QAnon which suggested the attack on Trump involved his political rivals including Clinton. The construction sign reflects that unsubstantiated theory and cracks a crude joke about it.
WCNC Charlotte reached out to the North Carolina Department of Transportation to see if this particular sign was managed by them. They said:
"There is a project under construction at N.C. 218/Sikes Mill Road, so the contractor doing the work put out some portable message boards. One of them must have been hacked into, so hopefully they will take corrective measures to keep that from happening again."
It is unknown at this time who is behind the hack or cruel prank phrasing.
