CHARLOTTE, N.C. — North Carolina drivers will now be able to use kiosks in Harris Teeter stores statewide to renew vehicle registrations and pay property taxes, the Division of Motor Vehicles announced.
The NCDMV added self-serve kiosks at select Harris Teeter stores in March as part of a pilot program. A Harris Teeter along Mount Holly-Huntersville Road in northwest Charlotte is the only location in the Charlotte area currently in service. The other two are in Raleigh and Fayetteville.
Drivers were initially only able to use the kiosks to renew driver's licenses, permits and state identification cards. Adding vehicle registration renewal and property taxes offers drivers an alternative that state officials hope will shorten wait times at DMV offices statewide.
NCDMV says more than 3,400 transactions have been completed at the kiosks. The agency plans to announce six additional kiosks later this month, including three in Mecklenburg County. They also plan to install one at Fort Liberty.
“The public response to the kiosk pilot has been overwhelmingly positive,” NCDMV Commissioner Wayne Goodwin said.
More kiosks are expected based on usage, but state legislation currently limits the kiosks to Cumberland, Mecklenburg and Wake counties. The kiosks are installed at no cost to the state, charging customers a 2% credit or debit card processing fee in addition to a $4.95 fee per transaction.
