RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina drivers who forget to pay their toll-road bills could soon see heftier late fees, and officials want access to more driver information to hunt down those in arrears.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation is asking state lawmakers for several legal changes this year as the 2024 legislative session kicks off, including a 50% increase to processing fees that get tacked onto unpaid toll bills.
Those fees are currently capped at a maximum of $48 per bill per year. Transportation officials want to increase that to $72.
The increase could bring in millions of dollars annually from forgetful drivers. It would be done by hiking monthly late fees for each bill from $6 to $9 per month; the state is allowed to charge eight months’ worth of late fees per year.
