Crash caused standstill traffic on northbound I-77

The North Carolina Department of Transportation said delays were around 15 minutes long and started around the Gilead Road exit in Huntersville.

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — A wreck on northbound Interstate 77 brought traffic to a standstill Monday afternoon.

The crash happened around 1:30 p.m. at exit 30, which is the Griffith Street and Davidson exit at mile marker 28.4 about 1.5 miles south of the Langtree Road exit. The North Carolina Department of Transportation said delays were around 15 minutes long and start around the Gilead Road exit in Huntersville. The average speed approaching the incident was about 20 mph. 

MEDIC confirmed paramedics responded to the scene. A traffic camera near the intersection showed dozens of cars caught in bumper-to-bumper traffic. Fire trucks and an ambulance could also be seen there.

The cause of the crash is unknown at this time, but MEDIC said initial reports show one patient with non-life-threatening injuries.

Drivers were advised to avoid the area.
