Outbound Independence Boulevard down to just one lane

A crash brought down power lines near Eastway Drive. Traffic impacts are expected to continue into evening rush hour.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Only one lane of Independence Blvd. outbound is open after a crash near Eastway Drive. Drivers leaving Charlotte and heading toward Albemarle Road or Matthews are impacted by the closure, which is expected to continue into the evening rush.

Around 1:30 p.m., the crash occurred on Independence between Charlotte and the interchange with Albemarle Road, which is also called North Carolina State Route 27.

Delays on Independence, which is also known as U.S. Route 74, stretch back to I-277 and Uptown Charlotte. The traffic impact is expected to continue into the evening rush hour.

A car hit a Duke Energy utility pole, according to a Duke Energy spokesperson. About 450 Duke Energy customers are without power as a result of the crash.

Drivers can use Monroe Road or Central Ave. as detours.

One lane of Independence Blvd. inbound had been closed after the crash. It has since reopened.
