SWAT incident near SouthPark Mall peacefully resolved, roads reopen

A busy intersection near SouthPark Mall was closed due to a SWAT incident at a Circle K along Fairview Road.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Multiple roads were closed near SouthPark Mall in south Charlotte due to a SWAT situation. All roads have since reopened.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said the incident started around 7 a.m. at the intersection of Sharon Road and Fairview Road. CMPD closed the intersection due to "police activity." Around 11:20 a.m., CMPD said its SWAT negotiators reached a peaceful resolution, and the person was taken into custody unharmed.

A WCNC Charlotte crew at the scene saw multiple SWAT officers with rifles and dozens of CMPD uniformed police officers. An entire shopping center at the intersection was closed due to the ongoing incident.

CMPD said the incident was contained to the Circle K, where a person inside the store was experiencing a mental health crisis. The person, who has not been publicly named, was taken to a hospital for an evaluation.
