NORTH CAROLINA, USA — As we near Memorial Day weekend, more construction projects are starting to ramp up, leading to many road closures. Here are some significant projects for this week.

Union County bridge replacement

Beginning May 25, North Carolina Department of Transportation contract crews will replace the bridge on Buford Short Cut Road over Adams Creek in Monroe.

The project contractor, Dellinger, Inc., will have until late October to remove and replace the bridge, with vegetation establishment continuing through April 2022.

Drivers will be detoured around the work area along N.C. 207 (Wolf Pond Road), Sandy Ridge Road, Austin Road and Griffith Road, returning to Buford Short Cut Road.

Interstate 85 ramp closures starting in Charlotte

Monday night, N.C. Department of Transportation contract crews will be closing ramps on Interstate 85 in both directions between the U.S. 29/N.C. 49 connector and Mallard Creek Church Road.

The $6.3-million project is set to improve about 13 miles of the highway between the lower connector and N.C. 73.

The exit and entrance ramp closures will take place over the next three weeks from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night, as weather permits.

Crews will begin on I-85 North at the lower connector, continuing to University City Boulevard, Harris Boulevard, and Mallard Creek Church Road.

The closures will then shift to I-85 South ramps at these interchanges.

The project consists of repairing and sealing the existing concrete pavement joints, repairing shoulders, and replacing all pavement markings and markers between the U.S. 29/N.C. 49 connector and Mallard Creek Church Road.

In the newer section of concrete highway between Mallard Creek Church Road and N.C. 73, crews will install snow plowable markers. The project also includes improvements to the bridge over Mallard Creek, including a new deck overlay to improve the riding surface for drivers.

Section of New Town Road closed Monday for tree removal

A section of New Town Road will close next week between Marvin Road and Waxhaw - Marvin Road, weather permitting.

The closure will be in place between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday - Wednesday so N.C. Department of Transportation contract crews can safely remove a large oak tree a few feet from the road that poses a safety concern.

To keep drivers safe, detours will be posted along Marvin Road, Joe Kerr Road and Marvin School Road. Flaggers will also be at both ends of the closure to allow access for local traffic.

Interstate 277 ramp closures continue

NCDOT contract crews will continue with an ongoing project to improve 22 bridges along I-277. In order to complete this project, NCDOT says certain ramps are closed nightly.

Through Friday morning, May 28, these ramps will be closed on various nights from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.:

  • U.S. 74 West and East Third Street to the inner loop
  • Inner loop to East Fourth Street and U.S. 74 East
  • East Fourth Street to the outer loop
  • Out loop to Kenilworth Avenue

Detour information will be available online at DriveNC.gov under Mecklenburg County.
