School bus crashes into fence in north Charlotte; 1 person taken to hospital

The driver suffered a medical emergency causing the crash, district leaders said.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — One person was taken to the hospital after a crash involving a school bus in north Charlotte, Medic said. 

The crash happened along Old Statesville Road, near Hucks Road, around 2 p.m. WCNC Charlotte crews saw a school bus that appeared to crash through a fence and drive down an embankment. The emergency door of the bus was left open following the crash. 

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools said the driver of bus 1967 suffered a medical emergency that resulted in a crash. There were 22 students from Croft Community School on board at the time of the wreck. Four students were evaluated for injuries at the request of their parents, but none were taken to the hospital by ambulance, according to a CMS spokesperson.

Medic initially said five people suffered minor injuries in the wreck. The agency later clarified that one person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
