6-year-old dies in crash that shut down south Charlotte road; driver to be charged

Anthony Tremane Bailey, 24, will be arrested for involuntary manslaughter, reckless driving, and child restraint violation once he leaves the hospital.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A 6-year-old child was killed and a man was hurt in a crash in Myers Park on Friday morning, police said.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police were called to the accident in the 1300 block of Runnymede Lane between Colony Road and Sharon Road around 7:50 a.m.

Investigators said the car hit a curb, ran up on a sidewalk, hit a fence, went through a creek, and struck a tree. According to Medic, two people were taken to Atrium Health-Main with serious injuries.

"The driver and the front seat passenger were not wearing seatbelts. The front seat passenger was a child that should have been in an appropriate child seat for his age and weight," police said.

All lanes of Runnymede Lane were closed between Colony and Sharon Road while police investigated the crash.

Speed and inattention appeared to have contributed to the wreck, police said.

Warrants have been obtained for involuntary manslaughter, reckless driving, and child restraint violation. The driver, 24-year-old Anthony Tremane Bailey, will be charged after leaving the hospital, CMPD said.
