LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. — A police chase on U.S. 321 ended with a serious crash that required a medical helicopter in southern Lincoln County on Friday, officials said.
North Carolina State Highway Patrol was on the scene of a crash along U.S. 321 near Long Shoals, which is near the border of Lincoln and Gaston counties.
A WCNC Charlotte crew saw numerous state troopers, police vehicles and other first responders on the exit ramp for Exit 20 on the southbound side of U.S. 321 around 9:45 a.m. An Atrium Health medical helicopter was called to the scene. The helicopter landed at Carolinas Medical Center, according to flight-tracking data.
State troopers said the driver who crashed was clocked speeding on U.S. 321 in Lincoln County. The driver, who hasn't been identified, allegedly refused to pull over before he crashed on the exit ramp to Gastonia Highway. A tow truck pulled a smashed-up sedan out of the woods, where the car rolled down an embankment in the crash.
North Carolina State Highway Patrol hasn't given any further details about the incident.
