CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A busy Uptown street is expected to reopen Tuesday after a massive sinkhole shut it down in late July, officials said.
The sinkhole at the intersection of South Cedar Street and West Morehead Street, not far from Bank of America Stadium, will open on Tuesday. The road closed on July 30 when the sinkhole opened due to a broken water main. Charlotte Water said its crews were able to fully repair the pipe and patch up the road.
WCNC Charlotte's crew in the area saw the road was paved but still closed. Charlotte Water said crews are expected to finish minor work in the area on Monday.
The broken water main disrupted service to homes and businesses in the area. Fortunately, no one was driving through the area when the sinkhole formed. Water service was restored later the same night.
"That's a pretty big hole," Elliot Wilks, who lives in the area, said. "I don't know if that happened last night or this morning, but that's pretty scary if you were going to drive over that."
