SOUTH CAROLINA, USA — Beginning Friday night, drivers in South Carolina will see more troopers on the roads. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is stepping up enforcement for the New Year's holiday weekend.
Troopers are encouraging drivers to use common sense over the weekend and not to drink and drive.
"If you're going to be out and about, obviously our biggest concern around the holidays is drinking and driving," SCHP Master Trooper Gary Miller told WCNC Charlotte. "Driving under the influence is not an accident. It's something that happens intentionally. For us now, there's no excuse for it."
According to the Centers for Disease Control, over 3,200 people were killed in crashes involving alcohol in South Carolina from 2009 to 2018.
The SC Highway Patrol's special enforcement efforts for New Year's weekend begin at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29 and end at midnight on Monday, Jan. 1, 2024.
