CHARLOTTE, N.C. — As Charlotte continues to grow, many roads in the Queen City just weren't built for the congestion, especially some of the two-lane roads around the interstates.
One of the worst intersections is Wallace Neal Road and West Boulevard near I-485 and Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Wake Up Charlotte viewer Todd Day says he uses that route to and from work every day and the backups are very long during rush hour because there's no traffic light to allow drivers to make left turns.
"During peak times it can be almost impossible to turn left onto West from Wallace Neal and left onto Wallace Neal from West. Help!" Day tweeted.
The intersection has been a major problem for some time. According to traffic records, there have been 50 crashes there within the last five years.
NBC Charlotte reached out to the Charlotte Department of Transportation and learned there is help coming to this intersection. CDOT said they studied the intersection and determined a traffic light will be installed.
The bad news? They don't yet have a date for when it will happen. CDOT said the first step will be to add a left turn lane to eastbound West Boulevard.
In a statement, CDOT said:
"We do not have an estimated installation date at this time for this new traffic signal. A left turn lane on the eastbound West Boulevard approach to this intersection needs to be installed prior to signalizing this intersection. The River District development is contributing to this work. The timeline for getting the left turn lane on West Boulevard and the traffic signal installed will be based on the development."
