CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The NBC Charlotte Defenders team is learning about a scary incident on the road last month.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said a truck’s cargo hit a woman’s car on York Road in the middle of the day. She’s alright, but her car was significantly damaged.
NBC Charlotte has been reporting on the danger of unsecured loads for months. Now, we've learned dozens of people have been charged for not properly securing their loads.
In the latest case, the 52-year-old woman told police the truck’s cargo hit her hood and windshield causing $3,000 in damage.
Before that, NBC Charlotte reported on another incident where a woman said she hit a chunk of debris on I-77 causing nearly $1,300 in damage.
“It’s dangerous. I see debris on the side of the highway all the time,” the woman previously told NBC Charlotte.
NBC Charlotte also reported on other similar cases, including the driver of a jeep who survived when a wheel came loose from a boat trailer on Highway 70 in Lenoir County, crashing through her windshield.
In another incident, a lawnmower fell off a truck on South Boulevard and hit a man’s car.
The NBC Charlotte Defenders team obtained state data showing 1,061 cases where people were charged for improper loading in North Carolina in 2017. In Mecklenburg County alone, there were 104 charges and 35 convictions. AAA said it’s a preventable problem.
“Just pretend when you are securing your load that your loved ones are right behind you,” a AAA spokesperson previously said.
In the latest case, police said the victim was able to identify the trucking company and they’ve been notified about the cargo.
At this point, no one has been charged or cited, and police did not release the name of the company involved.
The victim and company are working on a resolution, according to police.
