Two hurt after ATV crash on north Charlotte street

CMPD said both drivers were apprehended at the scene, but no formal charges had been filed yet.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Two people were hurt in a North Charlotte ATV crash Wednesday night after Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police responded to reports of about 20 ATVs taking over the street.

Police said the initial 911 calls came in around 7:45 p.m. along North Tryon. Officers attempted to stop the ATVs, but the riders kept going. CMPD continued to follow the drivers with its helicopter.

Two of the ATVs collided at North Tryon and Craighead, with the drivers receiving minor injuries from the crash.

CMPD said both drivers were apprehended at the scene, but as of Thursday afternoon, no formal charges had been filed yet.

This is not the first time ATV and biker groups have terrorized the streets in Charlotte.

Back in February, callers reported dirt bikes and ATVs driving recklessly on Morehead Street, Freedom Drive, Wilkinson Boulevard, Statesville Road, Oakdale Road, streets around South Park Mall, and several other streets, according to police.

Police were able to locate the dirt bikes and ATVs near the 4600 block of Oakdale Road, where four people were arrested, and three others were issued citations.

CMPD Crime Prevention Officer Johnathan Frisk recommended drivers slow down, pull off the road, stop the car, and let the riders pass if caught in the middle of one of these groups.

“Once you’re stopped, and you’re calling 911, the direction of travel, you know, approximately, if there’s five, 10, if you think there’s 30 of those motorbikes out there,” Frisk said, “then you need to let us know that because more than likely you’re not going to be the only person calling 911.”
