CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Drivers in south Charlotte will see even more congestion to start the new year as Charlotte Water replaces some pipes in the area of Tyvola Road.
Charlotte Water announced that Westpark Drive will be closed and only one lane of eastbound Tyvola heading toward South Boulevard from Interstate 77 will be open through April for the project. Crews will be replacing water pipes and failing wastewater pipes.
Traffic will be detoured onto Old Pineville Road and Griffith Road during the replacement process.
Drivers will only be allowed to turn right onto Tyvola out of the McDonald's parking lot and 77 Center Drive during most of the work.
Businesses in the area like Yummy Crab are already seeing impacts from the construction in the area since it started Monday
“We would normally be busy," Victoria Coleman, a server at Yummy Crab, said. "I would pretty much have all of the tables filled. Right now, it’s not as busy as it would normally be.”
Coleman even had trouble navigating the changes on the road on her way into work Tuesday morning.
“When I came in today, I had to go all the way down to do a U-turn just to come in," Coleman said. "I thought I was going to be late because I had to go down to turn around.”
There are concerns that customers will have trouble getting to the business with the lanes blocked off, but Coleman said she hopes customers still find their way, even if it takes a few minutes longer.
“We’re open, and we’re ready to feed you the best seafood ever," she added.
Charlotte Water has been working on numerous water pipes around the city lately. In late December, they repaired a wastewater pipe under the 1200 block of Kenilworth Avenue, fixed a water service pipe under the 8700 block of Ellington Park Drive and repaired a water main in the 2500 bloc of Selwyn Avenue. The institution has been working hard on the South End Water Main Improvement Project as well, which entered phase seven in mid-December.
