Woman dies in University City car crash

The car's driver, later identified as 27-year-old Ashley Diane Davenport, died at the scene.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department detectives are investigating a fatal car crash that happened early Monday morning in the University City area of Charlotte.

CMPD officers responded to the 1800 block of J N Pease Place, which is north of West W.T. Harris Boulevard and west of Interstate 85, after getting reports of a crash in the area.

Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC responded with CMPD around midnight on Monday and found a significantly damaged silver Kia Forte that had run into a parked, unoccupied box truck.

The Kia's driver, later identified as 27-year-old Ashley Diane Davenport, was still inside the car with life-threatening injuries. She died at the scene.

Davenport’s vehicle was traveling north on J N Pease Place when it lost control and struck the rear of the parked box truck, according to the preliminary investigation. Authorities said she wasn't wearing her seat belt properly at the time of the crash, which could have contributed to the severity of her injuries. Excessive speed is suspected to have played a role in the accident, though the investigation remains active and ongoing.

CMPD detectives, along with the Motor Unit, are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Crime Scene Search officers were also present to collect physical evidence.
