YORK COUNTY, S.C. — Interstate 77 northbound is shut down at mile marker 84 after a multi-vehicle crash in York County, according to the York County Sheriff's Office.
The closure was first announced around 6:20 a.m. and is expected to last several hours.
Six vehicles were involved in the crash, including multiple 18-wheelers.
YCSO said several injuries were reported as a result of the crash.
A Hazmat crew responded to the scene to clean up fuel spilled from saddle gas tanks on two 18-wheelers.
During the closure on I-77, YCSO said traffic is being diverted to Exit 83. The closure is expected to have a lingering impact for the morning commute. All primary roads to I-77 are expected to see delays as a result of the crash.
Crews are attempting to open one lane of traffic on I-77 North, though YCSO said there are several crashes on side roads causing more backups in the area. Officials are urging drivers not to drive aggressively in efforts to get around the crash.
WCNC Charlotte is working to learn more about the crash.
